My Teaching Philosophy

  • As an educator, I strive to teach with care, passion, and, above all, kindness. I believe that meaningful learning cannot happen without a foundation of trust, respect, and genuine connection. My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that equity is more powerful than equality, students do not all begin in the same place or learn in the same way, and it is my responsibility to meet them where they are. By recognising each learner’s individual circumstances, strengths, and challenges, I aim to create a classroom that supports every student in the way that best allows them to thrive.

  • My approach is shaped by the influence of my own secondary school art teacher, whose encouragement and empathy played a transformative role in my education. The environment she created, was one of acceptance, curiosity, and creative freedom has deeply informed the teacher I aspire to be. I hope to cultivate a space that is welcoming, accessible, and safe, where students feel comfortable taking risks, expressing themselves, and exploring ideas that matter to them.

  • In my classroom, creativity is not simply a skill but a way of thinking, questioning, and understanding the world. I encourage students to experiment, make mistakes, and discover their own artistic voice through hands-on engagement and reflective practice. I view each student as an individual with unique perspectives, and I aim to nurture those differences rather than fit them into a singular model of what art “should” be.

  • Ultimately, my goal is to empower students to believe in their abilities, to develop resilience when facing challenges, and to recognise that their creative perspectives hold value. Through a balance of structure and freedom, guidance and independence, I hope to inspire a love for learning and a confidence that extends far beyond the art classroom. My teaching is not just about helping students make art, it is about helping them understand themselves, each other, and the world with empathy and imagination.
